How to Spend 1 Day in Toledo, Spain

How to Spend 1 Day in Toledo, Spain

Are you looking to add Toledo to your Spain itinerary? Toledo makes the perfect city to visit as a day trip from Madrid. The city is full of a unique cultural blend featuring Arab, Jewish, and Christian monuments. It’s extremely unique to see such a beautiful blend of these three cultures. Check out the guide below on how to spend 1 day in Toledo, Spain.

Do you also plan to visit Madrid while in Spain? Check out How to Spend 2 Days in Madrid.

Puerta Nueva de Bisagra

The grand, historic stone gate called Puerta Nueva de Bisagra marks the entrance of Toledo. As you walk through the city entrance, look up to see remnants of the large, wooden door that would drop down to lock at night and protect the city.

Parroquia de Santiago el Mayor

Once through the grand entrance of Toledo, you’ve arrived near the Parroquia de Santiago el Mayor. This historic church built in the 13th century on top of what was previously a mosque. As the name states, it is dedicated to Saint James, Santiago, who is the patron saint of Spain.

Get lost on Purpose!

The narrow alleys of Toledo are a huge part of the city’s charm. Take some time out to wander and admire the tight, winding roads. Be on alert if a car is coming – you may need to duck into a doorway so it can pass! I know you might be worried about getting lost with only 1 day in Toledo, but many narrow paths lead back to the main roads. Plus, Toledo is small enough that there is plenty of time to explore the side streets and see all of the main sites.

Ermita Mezquita (Mosque) del Cristo de la Luz

The Ermita Mezquita is an amazing site to see the historical religious shifts in Spain firsthand. The mosque was built in the year 999 (YES, you read that correctly!) and later converted into a church in 1085 during the Christian conquering of the city.

Once inside, don’t forget to look up (which is my advice anywhere in Toledo – the details on many of the ceilings are a pleasant treat). The dome is split into 9 sections divided by arches and each section has a different design.

Make sure to also walk outside through the garden. As you admire the view, the running water, and the planted lavender, be sure to notice the details on the exterior of the mosque as well. Ermita Mezquita is absolutely a spot to visit on your day trip in Toledo.

The Museum of Santa Cruz

Formerly a medieval hospital, the Museum of Santa Cruz is a unique museum. One treat is that there are several paintings by the famous El Greco here. The architecture alone is worth visiting. The museum is free, so you can either stop in quickly or take longer and admire the plethora of artifacts on the main floor.

Enjoy a Hearty 3-Course Lunch

For lunch we enjoyed a meal at Meson las Tres JJJ. For only €13 you can enjoy a hearty and delicious 3-course meal! This is a small, no-frills restaurant. I recommend asking for the Toledo specialities and letting the chef decide the meal. Prepare to take your time and eat – you won’t be rushed! Nonetheless, this is a very authentic experience and the food is amazing. Besides, there is so much to see with only 1 day in Toledo, you deserve a slightly longer lunch break.

Synagogue of Santa María La Blanca

The Synagogue of Santa María La Blanca is one of the most beautiful spaces in Toledo. Built in the 12th century (side note: does anyone else just love how much long-standing history is everywhere in Europe!?), the religious building represents a blend of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity.

Monastery of San Juan de Los Reyes

The Monastery of San Juan de Los Reyes is a must-see on your Toledo day trip itinerary. The gothic architecture is stunning and there is no shortage of spectacular statues of saints and animals in and outside the monastery. Step outside to observe the beautiful, central garden surrounded by the two levels of cloisters.

Inside, pay attention to the large amounts of “F” and “I” within the space; they represent King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I! Keep in mind, the monastery is closed to the public on Monday and Tuesdays. Admission is 3€.

End the Day with Panoramic Views

For panoramic, picture-perfect views to conclude your 1 day in Toledo, head to the Parador Hotel. Walk straight through the lobby, past the cafe, and out onto the patio for jaw-dropping views. Sip a coffee or vermouth here while overlooking the entire city.
